Canada Business GroupMr. Noah Siegel, the Director of International Affairs for City of Portland Mayor Sam Adams, has organized a group focused on enhancing the already extensive business relationship between Portland and Canada. The group has met twice and will continue to meet quarterly. Anyone with an interest in the business relationship between Portland and Canada is encouraged to participate.
This group recently participated in a visit to Oregon by representatives of the Calgary Board of Trade and have been interacting with other business interests, such as with the York region of Ontario concerning green-building initiatives in that region. The group hopes to serve as a resource for Canadian business interests that visit Portland, as well as local companies that wish to do business or expand their existing business relationships with Canada.
New Direct Flight Between Toronto and PortlandOn Thursday, June 17th, Air Canada begins non-stop service between Portland and Toronto. This follows Air Canada's establishment of a direct non-stop flight between Portland and Calgary last year. The flight presents numerous opportunities to increase business relationships, tourism, and will ease travel of Canadians to central and eastern Canada. For those of you who travel to Canada, please consider using the Calgary and Toronto flights to help them become firmly established and encourage even more expansion of flights.
Maple Leaf ForumThe Canadian Consulate and CASO will continue to co-host the Maple Leaf Forum this year. The Maple Leaf Forum is a discussion-oriented forum focusing on topics of interest to local Canadians and, in addition, provides an opportunity for networking between and among Canadians. These programs have been very popular and informative over the last couple of years, and have addressed such topics as the new Canadian citizenship laws, Canadian voter registration, estate and tax planning for Canadians in the U.S., border crossing and passport rules, and citizenship issues for children born abroad. This year will have a similar list of interesting topics including:
Canadian Citizenship/Dual Citizenship: (September 2010) Local immigration lawyers and tax planning professionals will discuss how Canadian citizenship or dual citizenship may affect you and your planning on a variety of issues.
Cross Border Business: (December 2010) The Canada-Oregon trade relationship is one of Oregon's largest bilateral trade partnerships. International flights to Canada have increased, energy flows across the border, and a Canadian-owned company in Oregon is providing 75% of the grass for the World Cup Soccer pitches. If you are Canadian or you do business with Canada or even if you travel to Canada, these relationships impact you. Join us for a detailed discussion about the nature, scope and extent of the business-to-business relationship between Oregon and Canada.
Canadian Retirement Funds and Pension Plans: (February 2010) The ability of Canadians to control and deal with their retirement funds in Canada is a recurring issue. Accounting and investment professionals with experience in managing RRSP funds will discuss these issues and present alternatives as to how these can be managed.
Time and Location/Networking: Given the popularity of these events, we have decided to host them all at a single location with enough room and refreshments to serve our needs. The time and location are:
Dates: To be determined (in the near future)
Time: 5:30 pm
Location: Davis Tavern, corner of N.W. Davis and 5th Avenue
Each Maple Leaf Forum will provide opportunities before and after the presentations to engage in networking with other local Canadians. Davis Tavern is excited to host these Maple Leaf events and has promised to have a Canadian beer available for us at each of the events.
We look forward to everyone's active participation and to the Maple Leaf Forum continuing to be a highly regarded and well-attended event.
